What Licence Do You Need to Race a Motorcycle in India?

One of the first things an aspiring racer should understand is the difference between a normal motorcycle driving licence and an FMSCI competition licence.

A road driving licence allows you to legally ride a motorcycle on public roads. An FMSCI competition licence is required to participate in applicable motorsport competitions.

FMSCI provides different competition licence options, including 2W Club Sport, National and International-level licences, depending on the discipline and event.

For rally and other public-road-related competition formats, a valid civil driving licence may also be required.

Age requirements

There isn't one universal age limit across every motorcycle racing event.

As a broad guide:

  • 15 years is a common minimum threshold for many full FMSCI 2W competition categories.

  • Riders below 18 may require additional documentation, medical certification and/or club/team endorsement depending on the licence and discipline.

  • Rally/public-road events generally require a valid civil driving licence, making the practical minimum age higher where a motorcycle road licence is mandatory.

  • Junior and youth categories can have different age limits.

  • Invitation-only events can impose their own eligibility criteria.

The safest approach is to check the current FMSCI licence requirements plus the event's Supplementary Regulations rather than relying on a generic age limit.

Ready to Race?

Getting into motorcycle racing starts with the right training, motorcycle, safety equipment and competition licence.

Before entering any event, always check the latest FMSCI calendar, competition regulations and event-specific Supplementary Regulations. Dates, venues, categories, age limits and eligibility requirements can change from one edition to another.

For riders looking to build their skills before entering competitive racing, a structured off-road motorcycle training can be a great place to start.

The dirt is waiting. Are you ready to race?
